SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT THE MANDALORIAN

Hello The Mustache and The Beard fans….

Let me start by introducing myself.  My name is Inez “Bengi” Figueroa Torres. I am the proud child of a Sci-Fi Geek. My Dad is “The Beard” as you all like to call him or he likes to call himself . . . lol.  The Beard has been into Sci-fi before Jammy, my sister Jeanette Figueroa, and I were ever a thought. As a child my Dad made sure we had a healthy education of all the important sci-fi basics. You know like reading comic books as bedtime stories, watching every Star Wars movie and attending my first comic convention with his friends, my uncles, at age 9. One of those friends was “The Mustache”.

My first summer job was working in the comic book store that The Mustache, Luis Matos, owned with his brother Marc. It was seriously the best job ever – I read comic books all day for free! My sister and I like to describe our sci-fi education as if THE BIG BANG THEORY  – the show about sci-fi geeks – grew up and had kids.  With that being said my sister and I are not really sci-fi geeks. We don’t think of ourselves that way only because I feel that the title holds an expectation about a certain amount of knowledge and expertise that we don’t possess.  We are however fans of all things sci-fi.  Therefore we like to affectionately call ourselves Sci-Fi “Mavens” if you will – Children of a Sci-Fi Geek.

If you are anything like me then you were super excited to hear about Disney + and their new show THE MANDALORIAN. However, as a Sci-Fi Maven I didn’t have all the answers. Since the show initially left me with some questions I therefore had to do some research. Questions like:

  • Who exactly is the Mandalorian?
  • When does this all take place?
  • Is the baby related to Yoda?
  • And why is he soooo damn cute???

Sorry about that last one. Also, Jon Favreau produced and is writing this? Really? Happy from IRON MAN? Really???

Now that the first season is over I can tackle the questions in the order I presented.

  • Who exactly is the Mandalorian?

I still don’t know! Okay, we know he was a foundling and his parents are probably dead. Other than that he is still a mystery.

  • When does this all take place?

Well they keep talking about the fall of the empire so we can guess its takes place after THE RETURN OF THE JEDI but that is still an educated guess.

  • Is the baby related to Yoda?

Haven’t got a clue!

  • And why is he soooo damn cute?

What is it about babies? Even green babies with pointed ears?

Not exactly brimming with answers this first season. I am curious to find out what is next. Will we get to see even more baby Yodas? Will we learn more about Yoda and whatever planet he was from? Is there a backstory between the baby and Yoda and are they connected in some way? As you can see I am into asking questions.

I guess we will just have to wait and see. Well, this Sci-Fi Maven is looking forward to the next season and I can’t wait to see what Happy . . . erm, Jon Favreau has up his sleeve. Lol. Maybe after the next season of THE MANDALORIAN I will write another article full of unanswered questions. Lol

  3. Nice job, Sci. Fi. Maven. Amusing article with lots of questions. The Mandalorian is definitely designed to be a show that capitalizes on some of the most secret parts of the Star Wars mythos and expects you to ask the questions that EVERY person in the world is asking. I mean, come on, the ENTIRE WORLD is curious about “Baby Yoda.” We don’t even know his name. (Is it a he?) Excellent insight in highlighting the main questions and teasing them toward the following season. Your humor IS reminiscent and similar to someone I know, but it is WAY better than his. Also, when you say you are not a sci. fi. geek, I believe you’re mistaken. Your ability to pinpoint the seminal reason why next season there will be a greater viewership, and captivated audience is right on point. Color me impressed!

  5. Wow! Sci-fi Maven, me thinks you’re a chip off the old block. Like The Beard you are driven by your inquisitive mind! The writer’s have certainly piqued your interests and the second season of The Mandalorian will be eagerly awaited.

I’m Eliseo Figueroa Jr. and you’re not. I was born in Saint Francis hospital across the street from Saint Mary’s Park in the Bronx. I was born there because that was where my mother was and I wanted to be near her. My parents came from Puerto Rico and moved to New York City when they were kids. My dad spoke fluent English – with an accent – but he’d had a stint in the army and had mastered the language. However, he needed a little work on reading and so everyday on the way to work he would buy a comic book and read it on the subway. In those days they were ten cents, a quick read, you could fold them and put them in your pocket, and when you finished you threw them away. Back home my mom would tell my dad to read me a story to put me to sleep. My dad had no desire whatsoever to read me any of my baby books so he read me one of his comic books instead. While other kids dreamed of Mother Goose, the Old Lady who lived in a shoe, or Little Red Riding Hood, I dreamt of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. And this went on for years. When I got older I asked him to give me the comic books. At that point he stopped throwing them out and I had a comic book collection even though I still didn’t know how to read. During the day I would make my mom read me my comics over and over again. I was dying to learn how to read and had been told that you learn to read in first grade. I remember being so excited the first day of school for the first grade. I couldn’t contain myself. I thought it was like magic – poof! – I was going to come back home and be able to read all of my comics. My mom had to sit me down and explain that it was a process. That over time I would learn how to read and by the time I finished the first grade I would be reading. I must say I was disappointed but more determined than ever to master this thing called reading. Over the years my comic collection grew (my dad had to keep building bigger and better shelves) and so did my interests. I mastered reading and went on to read books. I discovered the library where they actually let you borrow books – what a concept! And my interests in literary science fiction and fantasy expanded to include television and movies. Yes, I was and still am a full-blown geek! By the way, I’m the beard in our little duet. I have a goatee and no moustache. In all that time while growing up my dad never once complained. How could he? This was all his fault and he knew it. One time we were in a store where I was purchasing some comics and it all came to twenty bucks. As my dad was paying the man the owner commented on how much I was spending on comic books. My dad’s reply was, “Well, at least he’s not on drugs!” Science fiction, fantasy, horror, secret agents, giant monsters, and more are my drug of choice. Anyone who has ever sat in a darkened theater and has had their heart start racing in excitement as the music to STAR WARS begins to play knows exactly what I mean.
